In case you missed it, Apple launched their first iPad commercial last night during the Oscars and according to MacRumors.com Steve Jobs was spotted at the Oscars.

I personally would have liked to have seen something different in this commercial like a person reading Wired magazine, playing a game, and even using the Keynote app. I’m confident, as Apple gets closer to the release date we’ll see many more use cases demonstrated in countless commercials.

ipad

Like many I've read and see many hands-on videos and write-ups on the newly announced Apple iPad. Personally, I've been toying around with tablet devices since 2001. Since that time I've had over 4 tablet like devices and found them not to be a user friendly for a haptic device. Without an stylus it was nearly impossible to operate. Now, Apple has recently announced the Apple iPad and I see a device I've been waiting to have for nearly a decade.

Hands on Video of the iPad from SlashGear:

I don't see an iPad as an replacement of my laptop. There 2 completely different devices. One more powerful, and primarily used for content creation. And the other is less powerful and used mostly for content consumption (i.e. browsing the Internet, reading email, reading ebooks, playing games, and watching videos). Simply, the laptop is for doing work related stuff like typing a 30 page paper, editing video, and developing a website whereas the iPad is for leisure activities such as casually browsing the Internet, reading RSS feeds/blogs/ebooks, watching videos, and playing a game.

So I'm selling my 12 inch HP Tablet PC (HP Pavilion TX2000) and buying (2) Apple iPads - 16 GB WiFi model for $499 (One for me and my wife).

My top 6 Reasons why the Apple iPad is useful for me!

  1. I get a lean back experience vs. a lean forward experience which is what we often do when we use a laptop or desktop. This in my opinion is essential after spending roughly 10 hours at the computer at work. At home, I want a more relaxed browsing experience for surfing on the couch and/or bed.

  2. I can use it to access electronic (color) magazines, ebooks and especially textbooks

  3. I can finally use a mobile device for more than 3 to 4 hours without worrying about the battery dying on me. The iPad gives me 10 hours battery life on a single charge.

  4. I get to use all of my 70 something iPhone apps (or at least the ones that will work on the iPad) on a larger screen. Plus, I plan to buy and use the iWorks apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) for the iPad.

  5. I will be using the iPad to watch videos, YouTube and recorded TV shows from TIVO or iTunes anywhere in the house or while traveling. Bascially, I can enjoy recorded TV/videos anywhere there's a WIFI (upstairs/downstairs, patio, etc).

  6. I plan to use the iPad to access my Windows 7 PC remotely using the Remote Desktop app for the iPhone/iPad. The option to connect remotely to my PC is a huge plus when I find myself needing access to a document or software application.

Google recently deployed a new version of their Google Voice web app. As an iPhone user who missed having his Google Voice app, the web version is oh so nice!

Just head to your iPhone Safari browser and type m.google.com/voice. Log into your Google Voice account to SMS for free, Call, or listen to your voicemail.
